reading wrap-up april 2024

hi i'm fashionably late

i also didn't read a lot in april (anime eto bleh gif)

well, anyway!

I continued to play a lot of video games this month, and then I did in fact watch a ton of movies!

Something else I did this month was I participated in Old School April! I watched way more movies for that than I intended to, and didn't read nearly as many books as I sat aside to read for it, but that is okay. I had a great time! My relationship status also changed a little (all good! and for the best!💛) so April was a good month for me, even if it was just a slow reading month.

So speaking of books, here's what I read:

  • Nothing But Blackened Teeth, Cassandra Khaw (audiobook)
  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving (audiobook)
  • The Blueprint, Rae Giana Rashad
  • It Ends With Us, Colleen Hoover (audiobook)
  • The Pleasure in Pain, a horror-erotica anthology curated by Roxie Voorhees (ARC)

I technically finished The Pleasure in Pain during May, but I read it all month in April and I'm counting it as an April read because it. Was. LOL. I read it for an ARC, so be on the look out for a review of that, hopefully to be posted within the next couple days!

Anyway, I want to really shout out The Blueprint by Rae Giana Rashad. This is a dystopian alternate history novel that explores an in depth slave trade system after a civil war within the United States. It takes place in the very near future and follows the life of Solenne Bonet, a native Texan who escapes to Louisiana in order to try and become a free Black woman.

It's equal parts compelling and utterly harrowing, and explores intense relationships and intense politics. I don't want to talk too much about the actual story beats because it's so worth sitting down and reading for yourself, but it was absolutely the stand out book for April.

May is gonna be another month for horror novels. I've got a couple of new releases I'm excited to buddy read with my best friend, an ARC focusing on diverse cosmic horror, and a couple of other books I've started that I want to wedge some time in for.

Thanks for reading! Have a great May.
B.
